Request the written reasons
for your dismissal

If you have been dismissed, you can ask your employer to put the grounds in writing. It is a useful first step before an unfair dismissal complaint to the WRC.

Why ask

Under the Unfair Dismissals Act 1977, an employee who has been dismissed can request a written statement of the grounds for the dismissal, and the employer should provide it within 14 days of the request. The reasons given help you see what case you will face, and they are useful evidence if you later complain to the WRC.

Send it in writing and keep proof that you sent it. Do this promptly, because the 6-month complaint deadline keeps running.
